
The main anticipated category of Athlete of the Year was scoped by two Central Gauteng Athletics athletes, well deserved Rene Kalmer and Xolisa Tyali.
Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the prestigious Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday 26 November 2011 at the Sandton Sun.
The ceremony was attended by the Acting Mayor, City of Joburg Councillor Greeff and the Member of the Mayoral Committee Councilllor Mfikoe. Also present were the Central Gauteng Athletics partners/sponsors.
These awards were to honour Provincial Technical Officials, Coaches, Administrators and Athletes that participated at various South African Championships and represented South Africa internationally.
The main anticipated category of Athlete of the Year was scoped by two Central Gauteng Athletics athletes, well deserved Rene Kalmer and Xolisa Tyali.
The two winners represented South Africa at the Africa Cross Country Championships and also competent at the World Cross Country in Spain this year. Rene continued to represent South Africa at the World Championships in India about two months back.
A new category in this year’s Awards was that of Presidential Life Time Awards. Two household names for this category were announced by the President of Central Gauteng Athletics.
The recipients were New York Marathon winner, SA 10 000m and Marathon record holder, 4 times Olympic Games athlete and 5 times World Championships athlete, Hendrick Ramaala and Vreni Welch. Vreni Welch is a well-respected administrator in athletics with a rich background in organising races within the Province. Amongst others she has organised the Spar Ladies Race, Tough One 32km and other well organised races.
The Coach of the Year is Pierre Blignaut and Technical Official of the year is David Mokoena.
